About Selecta 7

Selecta 7Growing up in California and also attending part of elementary school in Hawaii, Selecta 7 was exposed to reggae at a young age and this infectious music has become like a soundtrack accompanying his surf/skate beach town life style.

Diagnosed with music addiction at the age of five, Osha B.’s obsession with collecting records was an early symptom. As a teenager he started playing guitar, and got heavy into punk rock and reggae (which back then went hand in hand). Back in the early 80’s Osha B was spending every penny he had on punk and reggae records. Little did he know that this would lead to becoming a DJ.

In the early 90’s he immersed himself further into reggae music and culture, playing guitar for The Conquering Lion Band and working at the Santa Cruz-based Conquering Lion Records. After the group split up, his natural move was into the studio where he began learning the art of producing.

As he pieced his studio together it dawned on him that he had more vinyl surrounding him than anything, and the idea of DJing began to infect his brain. It started with mix tapes, and house parties spinning reggae, dancehall and hip hop. By 1997 Selecta 7 Sound crew was stringing up speaker boxes in full force and starting to book shows on the regular.

In 2000, "7" took his love for reggae music to a higher level with “Radiowaves.” This was a three hour radio program broadcasting Tuesday mornings 9am until noon on KZSC Santa Cruz, 88.1 FM, and also streaming live on www.KZSC.org. The Jamaican-inspired show took listeners along "a progression session" featuring crucial selections. The show spanned from early ska, rocksteady and roots, to the latest in Jamaican dancehall along with remixes.

“Radiowaves” incorporated ocean awareness, local & global news, along with interviews from community figures, pro-surfers, and musicians. Among the legendary reggae artists who were interviewed were Barrington Levy, Don Carlos, Warrior King, Tanya Stephens, J.R. Reid, and Wayne Wonder. A few of the Santa Cruz surf legends Selecta 7 has interviewed include Jack O’Neill (owner of O’Neill Surf Company), and pro surfers Omar Etchevary, Matt Rockhold, Sean "Barney" Barron, "Flea," Tyler Smith, and Gavin Beschen.

Selecta 7 moved to Los Angeles recently from his home in Santa Cruz to further his career in music which involves DJing, producing, and working for VP Records. Since the move, DJ Jointz has been keeping the fiyah blazing on “Radiowaves”.

Selecta 7 has been an opening act for an array of well-known reggae, dancehall, and hip hop artists including Sean Paul, Damian Marley, Sizzla, Beenie Man, Wayne Wonder, Tanya Stevens, Beres Hammond, Anthony B., J.R. Reid, Gregory Isaacs, Yami Bolo, Midnite, Bone Thugs and Harmony, The Pack, Andre Nikatina, and Matisyahu.

Throwing tons of events, and weekly’s, Selecta 7 Sound became a household name in the Santa Cruz music scene, and was known as the local reggae & hip hop sound crew. By 2005 Selecta 7 was booking shows regularly throughout the Bay Area. Eventually the heat and hype of Los Angeles called out to 7, and he answered the call to travel further in his music journey.

During his search for an LA-based radio station, Selecta 7 met Jah Mex, the founder and CEO of shockout.com. The next step was a smooth transition to his mixes now being available on the latest reggae website making its international presence known and heard.

7 has played at numerous night clubs in L.A. and Long Beach, including several Jamaican Gold events at the legendary Century Club. As of recently, Selecta 7 and Shockout Sound hold a resident spot every Thursday night at The Dragonfly serving up the old school selections in the Roots and Rub-A-Dub room inside Jamaica Live.

Selecta 7 works in promotion and sales for VP Records, and is committed to helping the California reggae and dancehall scene grow. He is sponsored by, and represents VP’s clothing line, Riddim Driven, and can be contacted for orders at rasosha7@hotmail.com.
