Ask anyone on the street in Jamaica what the word 'Banton' means, and they will probably tell you two things. First, the meaning of the word: a reference to someone with a superior attitude and a gift of speech. Second, the name drop of superstar deejay, Buju Banton, who's picture might as well be right next to the street definition. One of Buju's first and greatest achievments came early in his career in 1992 when he broke Bob Marley's record in Jamaica for the most number one singles in one year. Tunes like " Love Me Browning", "Black Woman", and "Man Fi Dead" contributed to Buju's success in 92', and were compiled on his debut album, Mr. Mention. Since 1993 Buju Banton has released five solid albums. In 95' Buju took dancehall vibes to another level with live instrumentation, and conscious lyrics with his album, Til Shiloh. The album was considered to be a personal masterpiece for him, and was named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the best albums of the 90's. Before acheiving such nobal names and status, Buju Banton had already recieved a special name as a child by his mother. She called him 'Buju', a word used by Jamaicans for breadfruit, and is often applied to chubby children. Born on 1973 in a slum near Kingston, Jamaica called "Saltlane", Mark Myrie, AKA:Buju Banton, was one of 15 children in his family. He started toasting on the microphone at 13-years-old under the name of 'Gargamel'. Later he changed his name from 'Gargamel' to 'Buju Baton' as a result of admiration for Jamaican deejay, Burro Banton. By 1987 Buju earned his first hit single called "The Ruler". Working closely with Donovan Germain's Penthouse Records , he eventually joined the label in 1991. There at Penthouse Buju began boosting on to charts with the help of producer David Kelly. 15 years later, Buju has now opened the doors to his record own label,
Gargamel Music Inc. With state of the art studios in both Jamaica and
New York, Buju Banton will release his entirely self produced album,
Rasta Got Soul. Along with his new label and forth coming album, Buju
was nicknamed 'comeback artist of the year' in 2005 by the Jamaica Observer.
So far in 2006 he has been nominated for two International Reggae and
World Music Awards: Best DJ/Rapper and the Haile Selassie Award for Spiritual
Service Through Music. -Adam Arredondo
